Douglas B. Welmaker was raised in Houston, and has been practicing labor and employment law for 20 years, representing Defendants and Plaintiffs in both state and federal court. In the last seven years, he has limited his practice to representing employees who have been wrongfully denied overtime pay in violation of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
Mr. Welmaker graduated in the top 15% of his law school class at South Texas College of Law in Houston, where he was an Assistant Editor of the South Texas Law Review. He received an American Jurisprudence Award for the highest grade in his class for Torts I, was on the Dean’s List for 4 semesters, and was a member of the Order of the Lytae.
Mr. Welmaker is a member of the Southern, Northern and Eastern Federal Districts of Texas and has given a number of presentations to HR professionals and executives regarding employment discrimination and navigating the Fair Labor Standards Act.
Prior to limiting his practice to overtime claims, Mr. Welmaker was involved in litigating traditional labor law as well as employment law matters for Fortune 500 clients, such as Kroger, Safeway, Spaw Glass, Dow Chemical, and McDonald’s. Additionally, he prepared and edited employee handbooks, policies and procedures and advised clients with respect to human resources issues, investigations, and management and avoidance of lawsuits.
Mr. Welmaker has also litigated workers’ compensation retaliation cases, created affirmative action policies, assisted in the resolution of Unfair Labor Practice claims, managed OSHA investigations, and litigated a number of covenant not to compete matters.
